Clinical Aspect

Throughout this Health Science NAU program, I have been going to school and working full-time fighting off COVID-19. I work as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with a Neonatal Pediatric Specialty at a level one trauma in Arizona. As a RRT we take care of all patient populations from once they are born to the end of life. Wherever there is breathing or lack of breathing also known as apnea, we are there. 

Program Outcome 1: Graduates will demonstrate foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention concepts.

HS300 Case Study 1, 2, 3

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In HS 300 Human Disease, we did 3 different case studies that gave a brief overview of a patient’s scenario. For example, the first one was about Sally who experienced severe burning and itching in her vulva, and after a few days many small blisters appeared. The second case was about Violet, a 92-year-old female who has been in a nursing home for four months following a hospital visit with a fractured femur after a fall. The aspects of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and/or professional growth and development because it allowed me to critically think on all levels for the case. I had to identify the diagnosis and the prognosis, learn the signs and symptoms, the etiology of the illness, how it happens, the risk factors, possible complications, how it should be prevented in various levels, and explain my rationale for everything. This was definitely my favorite class in the health science program and was important to me because it taught me the foundation to finding evidence based research and determining what resources to trust when finding scholarly references.

This assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because it allowed me to demonstrate foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention concepts. In each case, I had to explain what my differential diagnosis was and how I would approach prevention for the disease. 

HS 300 Fact Sheet

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In HS 300 Human Disease, there was an assignment where we created a fact sheet of a disease process of our choice. Because I am a registered respiratory therapist, I chose acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); also known as adult hyaline membrane disease, adult respiratory distress syndrome, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, non-hydrostatic edema, shock lung injury, and wet lung. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and/or professional growth and development is practicing my skills with finding accurate information through thorough research. In the fact sheet, I answered what the disease is, the major pathologic and structural changes, interesting statistics behind it, who it affects, what are the risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnostic criteria for ARDS, how it is treated, what happens if it is not treated, and where could people get help and more information on the disease process. This is important to me because as a future health care provider, it is crucial to be able to find evidence-based practices and scholarly research articles that can support the plan of care for patients. With these skills I will be able to provide safe care and improve patient outcomes.    

(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?

In HS300 Human Disease, the assignment where I created a fact sheet about the disease process acute respiratory distress syndrome, demonstrated that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I demonstrated foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention concepts. I learned that ARDS treatment is directed toward correcting the shock, treating the underlying condition that initiated the respiratory distress, and improving the oxygenation of the blood by means of a ventilator capable of delivering an increased concentration of oxygen to the lungs under slightly increased pressure, thereby facilitating diffusion of oxygen across the swollen alveolar septa. In addition preventing further complications through organ support, fluid balance, lung function support, preventing further injury, avoiding oxygen toxicity and barotrauma, aspiration and ventilator acquired pneumonia, etc. 

 

HS-404 Epidemiology Writing Project Topic & Outline (Epidemiology PAPER COPD)

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In HS 404 Epidemiology, we did a writing project of a disease process of our choice. The disease process I chose was chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). COPD consists of emphysema and chronic bronchitis occurring simultaneously. Major pathological and structural changes caused by COPD are chronic inflammation and thickening of the walls of the airways, excessive mucus production, mucus plugging, bronchospasms, chronic air trapping and alveolar hyperinflation. The symptoms commonly experienced are chronic cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, mucus production, and fatigue. COPD is known for being the 3rd leading cause of death in the world and primarily caused by smoking. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and/or professional growth and development is that it gave me a deeper understanding of the disease process and all levels of how it affects those around the world and the United States of America. This is important to me because as a registered respiratory therapist working in an acute care setting, this is one of the more common types of patients we treat when they come in the emergency room with an acute on chronic COPD exacerbation. With the knowledge learned from this assignment, I can be more confident in the care I give for treating these patients.

This assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I demonstrated foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention concepts. In the paper, I went over the risk factors, how COPD is diagnosed, recent data showing the incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates rising in countries like the United States of America, China, and countless others. Also I go over how the need for improvements in disease prevention and management are clear as COPD causes a plethora of burdens to the individuals like financial, physical, mental, and social health.

Program Outcome 2: Graduates will demonstrate understanding of the interconnectedness of personal, family, organizational, community, and societal health.

HS 317 Advocacy Assignment
(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development? Why is this important to you?
In HS 317 Maternal Child & Sexual Health, we completed an Advocacy assignment where we chose a health issue from a list provided. The issue I had chosen to address was promoting vaccinations for children. This topic is important to me because there is still inaccurate information out there regarding the efficacy and validity of vaccinations. These myths came from a research article back in the day that tried to link vaccines with autism, however those articles have been retracted due to incorrect information. Ever since then, people still question vaccines and I believe it is important to educate those of the science behind it and the data that supports its effectiveness. In addition, I love children and believe they are the future. To progress, we need to educate, support, inform and inspire them to reach their full potential. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and personal and or professional growth and development is because it helped me practice finding and assessing credibility of an advocacy agency. This is important to me because by applying the criteria of the CRAAP test (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy and Purpose) I can find organizations that share evidence based information without bias. .

This advocacy assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objective for this category because I can see how social and behavioral factors like from this advocacy agency can influence diseases and conditions. In addition, I can demonstrate understanding of the interconnectedness of personal, family, organizational, community, and societal health.

HS 305 Socio-Ecological Model Week 2
(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development? Why is this important to you?
In HS 305 Theories of Health Behaviors, I completed an activity where I created a socio-ecological model. The socio-ecological model PowerPoint went over the risk and protective factors at each level of the ecological model for texting and driving. This includes public policy factors, community factors, interpersonal factors, individual factors, etc. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development was how I learned there can be many factors that contribute to the prevention or influence of behaviors. These include laws against texting and driving, punishment, criminal justice system, enforcement of laws, environment, education, school, social norms, relationships, parents, social media, age, personality, and much more.
(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?
In HS 305 Theories of Health Behaviors, this socio-ecological model I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I was able to describe the roles and responsibilities of individual factors in maintaining personal, family and community health. These individual factors of the ecological model for texting and driving can include age, personality, mental disorders, disabilities, peer pressure, social norms, time management, technology devices like bluetooth and cell phones, etc. In addition, I can recognize evidence of informational knowledge of the effects of attitudes, emotions, and relationships in the mind-body-spirit aspect of health.

HS 305 Social Networking Assignment
(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development? Why is this important to you?
In HS 305 Theories of Health Behaviors, we completed a social networking assignment. The social networking assignment made us conduct a contact list of those we were in contact with within the last 48 hours. Mine included my siblings, parents, and friends. Everyone in my network knows of each other in some way. My friends from elementary school also know my friends from high school. Also, my friends in college know each other and had some people that were in a relationship together. I have a small circle of people I talk to daily. The aspects of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development is that I learned that the people in my network can provide different types of social support. These include emotional, instrumental, appraisal, and informational. An emotional support is someone expressing positive affection, caring, loving, and companionship. An instrumental/tangible support is someone providing materials or equipment necessary. An appraisal support is someone validating beliefs, emotions, and actions. Lastly, an informational support is someone providing information or advice. This is important to me because by understanding the importance of a support system can really affect someone’s mind-body-spirit aspect of health.

In HS 305 Theories of Health Behaviors, this assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I am able to recognize evidence of informational knowledge of the effects of attitudes, emotions, and relationships in the mind-body-spirit aspect of health. In addition, creating the social networking assignment I can describe the different roles and responsibilities of individuals in maintaining personal, family and community health.

Program Outcome 3: Graduates will demonstrate writing and communication skills required for effective health professionals.

HS 317 Health Care, Ethics, and Equity Assignment
(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development? Why is this important to you?
In HS 317 Maternal Child & Sexual Health, we completed a health care, ethics, and equity assignment. This assignment contained resources from the World Health Organization about social determinants of health, Ethics and Reproductive Health: A principled approach by Ruth Macklin, Society and Public Health Education (SOPHE): Professional ethics-society for public health education, and No MAS Bebes; a story of immigrant mothers who sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S government after they were forced into sterilizations while giving birth at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the 1960s and 70s. The aspects of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development is that I learned that when health professionals act in an ethical manner, they can promote health equity. This is important to me because the actions that could have been taken by health professionals in this story to support each of the three ethical principles; beneficence, autonomy, respect for others, and justice; and therefore support health equity would include creating a positive and welcoming environment, provide effective communication ensuring the women know what the procedure entails, consent forms in different language for them to fully understand, time to make informed decisions with family planning, access to interpreters, counseling, and other services that can aid them in the best health outcome for themselves.

In HS 317 Maternal Child & Sexual Health, this health care, ethics, and equity assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I communicated health-related information effectively and identified credible, evidence-based sources of health-related information. In addition, I demonstrate writing skills using professional language appropriate for the topic, purpose and audience using APA format.

HS 410 Final Paper: The Future of Health Care in the USA
(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development? Why is this important to you?
In HS 410 Organization & Administration of health services, I completed an assignment with several classmates that were in respiratory therapy too. It was a paper called The Future of Healthcare in the USA. Since the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, health care has been a major point of contention in the United States. Ten years later, health care reform remains the most debated issue among candidates for office and among current lawmakers. The purpose of the paper was to examine the current state of health information technology, the current state of health care supply and demand in long-term settings, and to propose particular health care reforms for the good of the United States and its citizens. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development was that I learned the intricacies and complications that accompany health care in the United states and compared it with around the globe. This is important because if the goal for every nation, including ours, is to provide the best health care to its citizens, a proper foundation must be set. This foundation consists of a basic understanding of how healthcare is organized and administered.
(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?
In HS 410 Organization & Administration of health services, this assignment demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I am able to describe the current status of health service delivery, with a primary focus on the US system of health services delivery. In addition, I was able to compare the healthcare system of another country with the USA’s health care system. Also I demonstrated writing skills using professional language appropriate for the topic, purpose and audience using APA format.

HS460C Week 5 Application Activity 4
(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development? Why is this important to you?
In week 5 of HS 460C Health Leadership & Teamwork Health Professionals, we did an application activity #4. I selected an interprofessional healthcare team with which I have experienced and based on the description from the textbook, I briefly discussed the three distinguishing features of a community of practice as they relate to the interprofessional healthcare team. This is important to me because it made me appreciate the journey of learning and growing as I go meet different teams from different settings. In addition, I was able to assess my healthcare team and how we work together to provide safe, evidence-based care for patients to improve their outcomes.
(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?
In week 5 of HS 460C Health Leadership & Teamwork Health Professionals, the application activity assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category by demonstrating effective writing and communication skills essential to the health professions workplace.

Program Outcome 4: Graduates will demonstrate awareness of the importance of leadership and interprofessional teamwork among health professionals.

HS460C Observational Learning Experience 

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In HS 460C Health Leadership & Teamwork Health Professionals, I completed an observational learning experience activity. The fieldwork consisted of four 6-hour observation blocks for a total of 24 hours. Two of the four observation blocks were focused on observing leadership qualities and two of the observation blocks was focused on observing interprofessional teamwork qualities. The key aspects of leadership that I want to explore during my observation block is how to maintain composure during chaotic situations, how to earn trust and respect from others, and how to believe in oneself as a leader when times are difficult. Whereas, the key aspects of interprofessional teamwork that I want to emulate in my own professional activities are resolving conflicts between staff members, handling disciplinary actions, being fair to everyone, and creating a comfortable environment for everyone to learn and grow in. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development is because I can take the characteristics and behaviors that I liked from the leaders I observed and avoid the ones I don’t think would work for me. This is important to me because it will help me become the best leader that I can be to help my team succeed.

In HS 460C Health Leadership & Teamwork Health Professionals, the observational learning experience assignment that I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I am now able to analyze issues related to course topics in leadership skills and inter-professional teamwork identified during the observational experiences.

HS460 Week 3 Assignment #2  

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In week 3 of HS 460C Health Leadership & Teamwork Health Professionals, we completed assignment #2. After watching almost an hour of TED Talk videos related to leadership and leadership styles, I have learned that there are a plethora of different kinds of styles and techniques that can be effective depending on multiple factors including time, place, environment, people in the group, personality, and much more. The aspects of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development was the emphasis on understanding myself and improving self-awareness. This is important to me because by knowing my own style I can determine my strengths and areas of improvement, which can help me focus on those areas to progress.  

(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?

This assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I was able to apply principles of ethical and/or professional health practice appropriate to the discipline. In addition, I can analyze issues related to course topics in leadership skills and inter-professional teamwork identified during the observational experiences and completing self surveys to learn my own styles of leadership to establish a plan and be aware of my areas for improvement. In addition, by self-reflecting daily I can stay on track of my plan and be successful in reaching the goals set.

HS 200 Healthy Lifestyles Service learning

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In HS 200 Healthy Lifestyles, we completed an activity called service learning. The service learning activities I participated in was a fun way to combine classroom learning with the community. I decided to incorporate activities that would help me understand different views expressed in a wide variety of patients; appreciate the experiences of others; and link the past expressions of cultures to today’s society. I participated in the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality ADEQ flag program; Feed my Starving Children; St. Mary’s food bank; I presented to the American Lung Association’s Better Breathers Club at Arizona Center for Chest Diseases about Asthma, COPD, medication management, healthy lifestyle choices, exercise, nutrition, etc.; The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development was getting involved with the community and connecting with different diversities. This is important to me because these experiences have enhanced my communication and understanding with the community which is necessary to being a well rounded practitioner.

 In HS 200 Healthy Lifestyles, this service learning activity I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I was able to get involved with the community and apply principles of ethical and/or professional health practice appropriate to the discipline. In addition, I was able to observe other leaders and their characteristics and behaviors I can learn from.

Program Outcome 5: Graduates will demonstrate awareness and skills to sustain personal health and well-being.

FW321 Assignment 1 Baseline Stress Self-Assessment

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In FW321 Stress Management, I completed a Baseline Stress Self-Assessment activity. The assignment helped me create a stress portfolio which comprised of my heart rate, respiratory rate, stress level, subjective assessments; perceived stress scale, Adrell Wellness stress test; student stress scale; vulnerability questionnaire; tactics for coping with stress; and a reflection portion. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development was being able to see the interpretations of the results and reflect on ways I can improve. This is important to me because I can be honest with myself, and have both subjective and objective data to track my progress. 

(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?

In FW 321 Stress Management, the baseline stress assessment assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I was able to identify the stress related consequences of personality and temperament. The results of the assessments would show the interpretation of the scores and the pros and cons of certain actions caused by stressors.

 FW321 Stress Intervention Reflection Paper #2 WEEK 13

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In FW 321 Stress Management, I created a stress intervention plan and then did a reflection. I addressed what stressors I had previously, what emotions I noticed; how my stress intervention plan affected the way in which I coped with stressors. The stress reduction intervention plan I wanted to do involved yoga. The data collected showed the improvements after following the program. The aspects of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development  was the reflection portion. By tracking everything including daily or weekly assessment scores, emotions, feelings, thoughts, etc., it allows you to create a plan and determine if it is working effectively. This is important to be disciplined and create behavioral changes for stress management. 

(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?

In FW 321 Stress Management, this assignment I selected demonstrated that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I implemented various stress management techniques and interventions like yoga, meditation, and breathing techniques. In addition, I participated in several behavior changes, utilizing effective and appropriate strategies to determine its success.

FW321 Case Study Final Week 15

(1) What aspects of this assignment or activity made it significant in your learning and your personal and/or professional growth and development?  Why is this important to you?

In week 15 of FW 321 Stress Management, I completed an assignment called Case Study Final. This assignment made me have a conversation with a client named John, and develop a stress management plan to help improve on the baseline assessments and tracking the progression. I had John take stress level assessments then created a plan that included different stress coping mechanisms like music therapy, connecting with nature, and yoga. The aspect of this assignment that made it significant in my learning and my personal and or professional growth and development was being able to go through the whole process with the patient. This was important to me because I felt involved and like I was helping John out. 

(2) How did the assignment you selected demonstrate that you met the program outcomes and objectives for this category?

In FW 321 Stress Management, the case study assignment I selected demonstrates that I met the program outcomes and objectives for this category because I was actively involved in developing and implementing various stress management techniques and interventions. This included meditation, tai chi, yoga, breathing techniques, and much more. 

Reflective Self-Assessment

As I reflect back on what happened throughout the entire program of study in Health Sciences at NAU, I definitely have changed personally and professionally as a result of my participation in my Bachelor’s degree. It has honestly been one of the hardest but rewarding experiences of my life. The countless hours of reading, writing, studying, taking quizzes, finishing exams, posting discussions and replying to two classmates. On top of that, trying to balance school, working full-time, going to the gym, hanging out with friends and spending time with my family. However, in the end it was all worth it. Personally, I have matured throughout this program as I have gained more experience and knowledge. I have met some incredible people throughout this journey and learned from everyone. I can truly say I am happy, I am able to manage my time, I can cope with stress, demonstrate foundational knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention concepts; demonstrate understanding of the interconnectedness of personal, family, organizational, community, and societal health; demonstrate writing and communication skills required for effective health professionals; demonstrate awareness of the importance of leadership and interprofessional teamwork among health professionals; and demonstrate awareness and skills to sustain personal health and well-being! I feel like the more involved I was with my academics and hands on experience and application, it helped me be more comfortable and confident. I also learned that everything happens for a reason and we have to look at things in different perspectives to fully understand before we should react. From now on, I will continue to push past limits and make the best out of every situation. I will continue my education, learning, growing in all aspects of life, staying positive, and being strong so I can lead by example to inspire others.
